Infrastructure development is key to the achievement of sustainable development goals[1]. Its impact on economic growth as a direct contributor to GDP and as a catalyst for growth in other sectors is well acknowledged. Sub-Sahara Africa continues to take strides to close the infrastructure gap.
The challenge of infrastructure development is further exacerbated by the need to address the interlinked issues of climate change, urbanisation and population growth[2]. Recent outbreaks of pandemics such as COVID-19 and Ebola on the continent have also brought to the fore the need to develop local solutions in terms of infrastructure delivery.
In addition, the growth in infrastructure projects will therefore demand an increased pool of local experts to deliver sustainable infrastructure. Some of the prerequisites required for African regions to fill their infrastructure deficit include political will and leadership, national reforms, and institutional capacity, among others[4]. This require talented professionals who can influence policy and practice.

It is in this context that the Africa Sustainable Infrastructure Mobility (ASIM) initiative is proposed. The focus of the academic mobility is twofold:
01
1) developing a pool of highly qualified professionals in sustainable infrastructure development benefiting and learning from unique and diverse African challenges, and
02
2) improving the quality of education provision as a means to enhance sustainable infrastructure delivery.
ASIM
ASIM is a collaboration between four African universities and one EU Technical partner with a primary objective of developing education, training, and research capacity for African professionals to enhance the delivery of Africa’s sustainable infrastructure. The primary aim of this project, therefore, is to increase the talent pool of expertise in infrastructure and to develop the capacity of African HEI to deliver sustainable infrastructure education.
Specifically, ASIM aims to achieve the following objectives:
01)
Contribute to sustainable development through capacity development of skilled professionals who can influence sustainable infrastructure delivery;
02)
Enhance the quality of master’s degree students’ training for professionals who will be able to influence the sustainability agenda for Africa’s infrastructure projects;
03)
Enhance the quality of doctoral students’ training for professionals who will be able to influence the sustainability agenda for Africa’s infrastructure projects;
04)
Enhance management skills of academic staff engaged in managing postgraduate provisions in partner institutions;
05)
Enhance the skills and competences of academic staff in research, training, and supervision of postgraduate research;
06)
Develop an interdisciplinary research agenda for Sustainable Infrastructure in Africa beyond the project duration period, and
07)
Create a critical mass of researchers focusing on sustainable infrastructure in Africa.
